This isn’t just one, big “open letter”; It’s a couple open letters to teams that really need someone to speak the truth. I’m not saying that journalists in their towns aren’t doing a good job, but they also have to be politically correct—I don’t. I’m not going to be nice to these teams because they don’t deserve it. Today we’ll be speaking to the 3 teams in the NFL that need the biggest “talking to”: The Chargers, the Raiders, and the 49ers. One team is good, one team is bad, and one team is ugly. Cue the music, and let’s…
As a flexatarian, my diet dictates that most days are meatless, nut just Mondays. However, I realize that eating meatless even one day a week will be a big lifestyle change for some of you. The 5 W’s: Who? Well that was easy. You! And me, of course. What? Skip eating meat once a week, on Mondays. Where: Doesn’t so much matter, wherever you want to eat. I think home is great, but many ethnic offerings are meatless by design, so restaurants will be an easy choice. When: Weren’t you listening? I said Mondays! According to MeatlessMonday.com, there are some…
[topsy_retweet_big]There are many things that all athletes have to deal with; pressure, injuries, media and many more. When I think of the word “deal”, I automatically think of problem or conflict. Tim Lincecum has just dealt with contract negotiations and landed himself a pretty nice deal. Maybe now he can afford a hair cut so I can stop mistaking him for Ellen Page (Juno). Frank Thomas and Tom Glavine have to deal with transitioning from being a major league ball player, to a retired, rich, early middle aged man. I know what you’re thinking, would someone please give me that…
Mark McGwire’s admission of steroid use was met with great skepticism, and understandably so. While most found McGwire’s admission evasive at best, fans still gave him a standing ovation before his February 17th press conference, his first public appearance since his interview with Costas. Most people however seem put off by McGwire’s insistence that the steroids didn’t provide him any advantage beyond “health purposes.” According to a 2005 New York Daily News report, Curtis Wenzlaff provided McGwire with steroids in the 1990’s. The recipe called for 1/2 cc of testosterone cypionate every three days; one cc of testosterone enanthate per…
The NFL Draft is a couple months away, but after the Super Bowl everyone gets into “Draft Mode”. This “Draft Mode” leads teams to cut players, open up cap space, and start making their “needs” known. I could sit here and do a complete “Mock Draft”, but some teams require little discussion, and others “just plain suck”. However, there are 5 MAJOR needs that I think should be addressed. Those needs are to follow. True, all 32 teams will be mentioned, but only 5 things MUST get done in April for the “uncapped” 2010 season to be any fun. Things…
I came across a news item from ESPN that Jean-Claude Van Damme has big plans this year. The fact that he’s turning 50 in October is the reason for making big plans. First and foremost, Van Damme wants do a kickboxing bout for a reality TV show. The martial arts action movie star wants to fight in a legitimate kickboxing match. Quite the Opposite According to the news report, the nearly 50-year old actor is passionate about proving his skills in the ring. He wants to prove that being 50 doesn’t mean you slow down, quite the opposite for Van Damme. That’s…
When I took my first kickboxing class, I jumped in without a life-jacket. I had no consideration for my current fitness level. Luckily I fared well. Now, I am a regular kick boxer who attends classes each week. Technically, you need to start the martial arts-based program gradually. You want to come out of your first foray unscathed. It’s wise to take it slow. If you have tight hamstrings or quads, an inflexible back or hips or other physical restrictions, kickboxing might not be for you yet. Take it Slow Even if you are in great shape and participate in cross training…
I know that record wise the New Jersey Nets are on pace to tie the all time worst record in league history. At least you could see this coming, trade away all your veterans and a young team is going to struggle. The team that is the worst of all to me is the Detroit Pistons. Two years ago they were one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference and now they look like a doormat. General Manager Joe Dumars appeared to be a genius when putting together the ’04 Championship roster. Well he took that all back by…
Mike “Quick” Swick has been a part of the UFC ever since he premiered on season 1 of The Ultimate Fighter as an undersized light heavyweight. He earned his nickname by finishing his first 4 UFC fights in 5:20 combined. Swick was rolling through the middleweight division when he ran into Yushin Okami, who controlled Swick with his wrestling to earn a decision victory. During the fight, Swick repeatedly told his corner “He’s too big, he’s too strong” and the loss prompted his decision to move to welterweight. In his bout for welterweight number one contender status, Swick simply didn’t have…
You may have heard that it’s making a comeback, but what do we know about coconut oil? Is it safe? Is it healthy? Coconut oil is one of two tropical oils that were once widely used, the other being palm kernel oil. In the 1950s and ’60s, there was a campaign, led largely by the soy industry, to vilify oils that aren’t of US origin. The farmers wanted to protect their livelihood and make us dependent on soy, corn, and peanut oils. The problem is that these oils oxidize quickly in liquid form, therefore become easily rancid. They are ultra-processed,…
