Orthorexia–ever heard of it? I came upon this term about 18 months ago when someone accused me of being orthorexic. The person didn’t know me, but thought I had the condition when I had the audacity to suggest (upon being asked) that organic fruits and veggies are better for her health than so-called Healthy Choice meals. The nerve of me. The “Condition” For the record, orthorexia means “fixation on righteous eating”. What’s so wrong with that? I’m starting to think that the fixation that’s the problem is other people focusing on my healthy eating. Another aspect of this “disorder” that…
Let’s just take a quick peek at the cost of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games: Overall estimated costs: $2.5 billion Security: $900 million Media Center: $880 million Opening Ceremony: $30-40 million NBC paid $820 million for the broadcast rights to the Vancouver games. They estimate that they’ll lose around $250 million due to the high cost of the rights and the relatively low advertising revenue this time of year. I find this interesting, since they took an undisclosed loss on the 2008 Beijing Games, and yet bought the rights for both 2010 and 2012 for a total of $2 billion.…
I watched the movie trailer for Black Dynamite and drooled over Michael Jai White. He stars in the 1970′s-style blaxploitation action film about the legendary super crime fighter. The DVD hits the streets this week. White’s charismatic physic comes from training in martial arts for more than 20 years. He owns black belts in six styles: Shotokan, Tae Kwon Do, Kobud, Goju Ryu, Tang Soo Do, Wushu and Kyokushin. Martial Arts Man These days he practices and teaches the Kyokushin style. According to an interview he did with Ethan Alter of Giant, Kyokushin is the most popular style of karate…
Fighting Father Time:5 Fighters Who Need to Retire Last weekend’s UFC 109 featured what must have been the oldest main event in MMA history. As desperately as the UFC tried to make fans care about the organization’s first fight between two hall of famers, few did, and for good reason. Mark Coleman and Randy Couture stepped in to the Octagon at a combined age of 91 years. Coleman looked like the only things keeping him out of a wheelchair were the braces he had on each knee. MMA is not a sport where athletes should wear out their welcome. It…
If you were like me this week, you were breathing a sigh of relief when the heavyweight fight between Tim Sylvia and Wes Sims for Adrenaline MMA V in Youngstown, Ohio was cancelled. Bernie Profato, the Ohio Athletic Commission executive director ruled the bout “non-competitive” and informed Adrenaline promoter Monte Cox that it would not be sanctioned. I salute Bernie with a golf clap. Most commissions would look the other way and let this kind of fight happen, but not the Buckeye State. They did their research, and they knew this wasn’t going to be pretty. Sylvia confirmed the news on his…
No, I’m not saying he’s the most intelligent, the most tactful, or even the richest manager they’ve ever had. Instead I’m just saying this – he’s the best. Why do I say this? Look to Sunday 14th February, when Crystal Palace played rivals Aston Villa. In typical Neil Warnock fashion, he swore fantastically at the camera, hand gestures and all, prompting ITV to make yet another Neil Warnock-related apology. The Times describe him as a man ‘not afraid of controversy’, and Gary Naylor, one of football‘s greatest thinkers, describes him as one of the few football managers you either love…
At a glance, you might think that Group E were just a weak group in general. However, teams like the Netherlands have a lot to offer, especially seeing how their line-up features powerhouses like Arjen Robbern. Are they good enough to play amongst the elite? Maybe. One thing’s for certain though – there is little hope for any other team BUT the Netherlands against the likes of Spain or Brazil. Group E Netherlands Current World Ranking: 3 The Netherlands are off to a good start – ripping through the first 8 games, winning them all, and only conceding 2 goals…
I try to improve my racquetball game through conditioning exercises like plyometrics. Plyometrics is nothing new to the athletic world. It is an exercise program that personal trainers and coaches use to help increase their athletes’ power and performance. Increase Strength The plyometrics that I do help increase my strength and power on the court. I move faster, jump higher and even hit the ball harder. It may not make my opponents happier, but it helps me stay in the game and be a tougher player. As a result, I win more games with a faster recovery time. Personal Trainer In…
This past Sunday was the first without NFL action in about five months. That doesn’t mean that the headlines stopped rolling in. Congratulation is in order for the New Orleans Saints, their fans, and the city. Great, now we can all hate you, just like any of the other 31 teams. While the players have started their vacations, management and ownership started to look towards fielding a team for next season. This particular off season is going to be tricky because they are headed into an uncapped year. Some teams in the league I will never be able to understand,…
Is the way most people run wrong? It sounds weird given that the way you run is just the way you run, which, barring any injuries is the same way you have ran all your life. Recent research is suggesting that the kind of shoes we wear while engaging in jogging, running or sprinting has altered our form. The research came about when scientists wanted to investigate the effects experienced when runners planted their feet before the invention of the modern running shoe. After all, humans have been running for a gazillion years (give or take a bazillion years) whereas…
