Bodybuilders need to understand that the bugs that cause a cold or flu during fall and winter love to flourish in the cold and dry environments. We all know being ill means working out is not advisable, so it’s best not to get ill. Since we know the viruses flourish nicely in cold and dry conditions, the best approach is to keep away from these types of conditions. The reason you want to…

When you think of whole grains, what comes to mind? If you’re American, I’d be willing to bet you think of wheat, rice, and maybe oats. Even if you don’t get cable you’ve probably seen the ads or read the reviews. Mary-Louise Parker plays a mother who sells marijuana. I know, totally implausible, right? Who cares!?! She looks great, she’s over 40, and she’s a fantastic actor. However, how is it that a woman who’s over 40 plays a super-skinny mom that sells weed? How do you end up looking like that? Sure, it’s partially good genes. She got lucky, she got all the looks in the family, and she’s famous — that helps. Basically, there’s got to be something else. There’s got to be a…

Life as a bodybuilder is tough. Often eating high quality protein six to eight times per day can become tiring, but there are effective ways to boost the health of the body without looking to diet as the only source. Vitamins are essential for all bodybuilders. They keep the body in tip-top health. Bodybuilders often train their muscles to the edge of discomfort, and this can lead to over-training, infections, and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Vitamins are essential for growth, maintenance, and proper metabolism. Without these, the body will struggle to maintain its health through the intense training that…

The Minnesota Vikings and New England Patriots made a trade early Wednesday morning, sending All-Pro wide receiver Randy Moss and a 2012 seventh-round pick to the Vikings. In return the Patriots get a 2011 third-round pick from Minnesota. Moss had expressed his unhappiness with the organization about not having a contract pass this year earlier in the off-season. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Mike and Mike in the Morning that, although Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had never publicly expressed his frustration with Moss’s public unhappiness, it was bothersome to him. Moss played three full season and the first four…

With the 2010-2011 National Hockey League season opening on October 7, it is time get you ready for the upcoming season. The NHL’s Western Conference features some powerful teams, including three of the past four Stanley Cup championships, headlined by last year’s Cup winner, the Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks, having been purged of much talent in the off-season due to salary cap restrictions, are still a legitimate threat to repeat but a whole host of teams are on their tails (or tail feathers). The Vancouver Canucks seem poised to compete, as are the always dangerous Detroit Red Wings, San Jose…

Last week John posed a completely fair question:  Would you want your son to play football?  Actually, it’s more like: “Would you let your son play football knowing he could get a multitude of concussions?” Well, I’m really not sure, but I do know some things about the NFL.  I know how the NFL works, and I know how guys have played since 1983 (when I really started caring.) Will the behavior of football players lead us to an answer?  I think it will! Football players are easy to read even though they wear helmets and you can make clear…

For the second time in a week reports are surfacing about, Tour de France winner Alberto Contador testing positive for performance enhancing substances. First, according to Contador’s own admission last week, he tested positive for clenbuterol. This is not a steroid, but an anabolic agent used for weight-loss and muscle-building. Contador claims that this positive test came from tainted beef. The second allegation stems from a new test that detects chemical called plasticizers. These chemicals are found in plastic IV bags and can prove that an athlete is using blood transfusions to boost endurance. Blood transfusions are banned by the…

I had a baby this week — my fourth. She and I are both perfectly healthy and happy to be at home with my husband and the other kiddos. That said, a journey of another sort begins in the next few days, the one to getting back into pre-pregnancy shape yet again. I freakishly gain 50 to 70 pounds with each pregnancy, and this was no exception. While frustrating, I’ve come to accept that my body needs to do what it needs to do to grow healthy babies, which is my highest priority. Join me as I go from obese…
