Sports franchises get themselves into more trouble than they should. Why? They’re sneaky, devious, and deceitful. You name the disease and they’ve got it. Some franchises are “fully above board” and it would be hard to say anything negative about them – unless you hated their guts. The 49ers of the 80s and – well, that’s enough. Some franchises are downright vile in their approach to players, the media, and their fans. Don’t confuse this with stupid. The Lions are stupid, not devious. The Chiefs are just stupid. Hell, even teams like the Braves, Suns, and Jets aren’t devious. They’re…
I was bummed to find out that I missed National Lemonade Day on Friday, but that doesn’t mean I can’t celebrate the most popular citrus fruit just a few days late! Instead of the usual sugar- (or worse, artificial sugar-) laden drink, I’ve celebrated with a beautiful and refreshing cucumber lemonade, and I’ve got a few great ideas to help you live up “When life gives you lemons” day. Actually, I’d be pretty happy for life to give me lemons if it meant I got to make these recipes more often! Health Benefits It’s no secret that I start almost…
This week, Sluggers and Slugs will rip the cover off of the baseball on the moments from around the diamond. I’ll shed some light on the week’s most crucial match-ups in both the American and National Leagues. I will also be giving my two cents on NL Rookie of the Year race. Week 20 Highlights The week started off nicely with my prediction that the Philadelphia Phillies would take two of three against the San Francisco Giants and claim the wild card lead in the National League. The Chicago Cubs had an eventful week, which started off by trading first…
I’ll never forget watching the press conference following the 2004 national semifinal between Okie St. and Georgia Tech. Eddie Sutton tells the press, “If this had been a 3-game series we would have won.” Well, it wasn’t! So get over it! Nothing makes me more crazy than listening to people complain about what they could have done. The Braves could have kept their division winning streak alive if Frank Wren wasn’t such an idiot. Michigan could’ve finished out the ’93 national title if Chris Webber could count. Ryan Leaf might have turned out ok if he would have done just…
Everyone gets to a point where their bodies simply aren’t happy with them. Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do to stop the “creaks and groans” of middle age, but there are some things you can do to slow them down. In some cases it isn’t even about being middle-aged — it’s about being “overused.” If you played competitive sports for a long time, spent some time in the minor leagues, played college football, or just “overdid it” you know what I mean. It’s no fun to get out of bed every day and have the same aching knee, shoulder, or…
Yesterday I was in my last set of box jumps and a nice looking, very buff man approached me. He was very polite and watched me jump up and back continuously until I was finished. When I stopped and stepped away, breathless and sweaty, he asked me if I could answer a question for him, “What was I training for and why was I doing box jumps?” My answer was simple, “speed and strength.” Please Explain You may be thinking that speed and strength do not go along, but I am going to show you that they are a pair!…
This week in the “Couch Potato Blitz” we cover the During the off-season, it was confirmed that Houston Texans standout rookie linebacker Brian LeGarrette Blount missed almost all of his senior season for punching a Boise State player in the face after a loss in their first game of the Oregon Ducks’ 2009 season. Blount, who showed big NFL promise throughout college, cost himself millions of dollars with one frustrated swing. Blount went from likely being drafted in first three rounds to signing as a free agent with the Tennessee Titans. At mini-camp this past week Blount was at it…
No gym is immune to them – they are people with poor gym etiquette! You’ve seen them, the ones who neglect to wipe down machines after marathon-length cardio sessions, dripping with sweat. The guys who scream during sets and the women who stake a claim for “their” spot in a group exercise class. Every gym has at least a few rule benders, and sometimes a few gym etiquette reminders go a long way. Whether you have been at your gym since it opened and feel a little entitled to bend the rules here and there or are just beginning your…
Florida Marlins catcher, Ronny Paulino was suspended 50 games for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Paulino will not contest the result and his suspension will start immediately and carry into the beginning of next season. Paulino claimed that the positive test resulted from a diet pill that was not approved by major league baseball. MLB’s statement did not reveal for which drug Paulino tested positive, as per policy. Paulino issued a statement. “To control my weight this season, I used a dietary pill. I recently learned that the dietary pill contained a substance banned under…
Perhaps you’ve heard of the newest reason people “can’t” eat well, known as the food desert. What are they? Where do you find them? Most importantly, how do you survive the food desert to maintain good health? Digging a bit beneath the surface turns up some serious challenges to adopting a healthy diet in these areas, but also some great possibilities. Come with me as we explore the difficulties and some possible solutions to the dearth of healthy options. What Is a Food Desert? A food desert is a geographic area that has little to no access to the foods…
