High Intensity Resistance Training, also known as HIRT, is a different kind of strength training, and it’s making waves. Bodybuilders are finding that adding one or two days of HIRT in place of their usual split is resulting in a leaner look and lower body fat. Whether you’re cutting or bulking, you can use HIRT to elevate your basal metabolic rate (BMR), keep muscle while you’re cutting, minimize fat gain during bulking, and gain muscular endurance. The Basics HIRT is sometimes called interval training, but that’s easily confused with High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), which we’ll discuss soon. Other times…

By now most of us have heard of programs like P90X and CrossFit, and who doesn’t think getting “ripped in 90 days” sounds like a good plan? As avid exercisers, most of us use crunches in our abdominal routines. However, to avoid the dreaded “plateau,” it’s best to change your routine often to keep the muscles guessing. This article will breakdown 12 crunch-free exercises to use as a complete abdominal and core workout or to add moves your existing ab routine. In my class, we do about 20-25 reps of each exercise. It may take some time to work up to…

If you think you’ve tried everything to shed fat, you’ll want to consider the blood type diet. Today we’ll look at what it is to eat for your blood type, and discuss how type As should eat. I confess, I thought this diet was absolute quackery at first. A friend whose health philosophies and practices I respect mentioned it to me one afternoon at a birthday party, so I decided I owed it to myself to at least look into it and bring you the story. Since that day, I’ve done quite a bit more reading into the subject and,…

When Dwight Howard was drafted #1 overall by the Orlando Magic out of Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy, he was not the “Superman” he is today. He was a skinny, tall kid with tons of potential. Somewhere between 2004 and his current dominance “inside the paint,” he managed to put on weight and sculpt his body. How else could he handle the rigors of playing “inside” in the NBA. He is the 2-time defending NBA “Defensive Player of the Year” after all. You can’t achieve that as the scrawny kid. Dwight does many different exercises and routines that have helped take…

For some people there is nothing more relaxing than a hot sauna after lifting weights, but some new research coming out of the University of Montana is suggesting that this may not be the best time for it. Post-exercise is one of the best times to eat as you have set up pretty much the perfect portioning – almost all the calories you consume will go towards the muscle. For years magazine articles and advertisements have pushed this as the ‘window of opportunity’ and to some degree they are right. That said, ultimately total calorie intake will determine what happens…

Week 10 of the baseball season gave us many great moments, but none greater than the debut of Washington Nationals’ pitcher, Stephen Strasburg. Future Hall of Fame catcher Ivan ‘Pudge’ Rodriguez was quoted in an article on ESPN giving Strasburg this compliment: “I’ve been catching a lot of guys, but this kid is unbelievable.” The Cincinnati Reds had a down week losing 4 of 7 and still managed to increase their lead on the NL Central. The Philadelphia Phillies continue to sink in the NL East and now trail the Atlanta Braves by 3.5 games. After losing 12–2 and 10–2…

The World Cup — also known as the world’s largest sporting event – opened in South Africa on June 11th. However, the major action started on Saturday the 12th, when England played the United States. It was probably the most hyped match in recent memory — so hyped that Adidas was running ads asking fans to “pledge” to watch the match. I didn’t pledge to watch it — I just watched it. England — which possesses the English Premier League and many of the world’s best players — should have had the Americans over-matched. However, the game was a 1-1…

Authorities could strike oil as they dig deeper and deeper into the allegations that Roger Clemens used steroids during his pitching career. The veteran of the mound is accused of paying Brian McNamee, a New York personal trainer, for training services and performance-enhancing drugs. What’s worse, the money is said to have come from Roger Clemens’ nonprofit organization.  McNamee reported to authorities that he received payments from the Roger Clemens foundation from 1998-2001.  Rusty Hardin, Clemens lawyer, has spent the last two years attempting to discredit McNamee. Hardin commented on the foundation payments, “Obviously, Roger never paid him for any…

Summer is here and it’s the best time of year to search for love. Whether you’re looking for a passionate night of panty tossing or the fire of a lifetime, you need to prepare your body. One potential place to find love is the beach. This summer men and women will spend countless hours splashing in the water, tanning and surveying their peers. What is it that the opposite sex is looking for? Let’s just say the odds of a girl saying to her friends, “OMG, is he reading Catcher in the Rye,” is highly unlikely. I don’t believe, in the…

A few months ago, when it was still cold and snowy outside, I wrote on how to stay safe exercising in cold weather. Now that it looks like we’re going to have record-breaking heat this summer, we need to talk about exercising when it’s hot. Last summer my favorite thing to do was hit the road as soon as the sun came up and put in five or six miles. When I’d stop an hour later, you could see the steam rising off of my skin as I did my cool-down stretches. It was heaven. The same weather considerations have…
