North Carolina football is in the middle of a complete resurrection.  Butch Davis was hired to fix North Carolina’s football program and make it into something that could stand alone with the great basketball tradition they have on campus. Remember that Davis was hired at Miami back in the 90′s the fix the mess that Dennis Erickson left behind.  Davis not only fixed the mess, but it was with his team that Larry Coker won a National Title. Butch Davis is a proven coach and currently the only people in the country who hate him live in Cleveland–though, to be…

We are coming off the 2010 All-Star break rejuvenated to finish a great run.  The Major League Baseball season is rapidly approaching the July 31st trade deadline.  An organization’s season can be made or broken at this point depending on whether they are buyers or sellers. One team that should be in the buying business is the Minnesota Twins.  In last week’s article I talked about how crucial the 4 game series with the Chicago White Sox would be directly after the break.  The Twins took 3 of 4 including a 4 run 9th inning comeback on Sunday and closed…

Since its debut in 1993 Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has been the subject of much debate. Those opposed to the sport have referred to it as “barbaric” and “uncivilized.” One opposition group, lead by Senator John McCain, even succeeded in causing a four-year forced hiatus of the sport from 1997 to 2001. The efforts by McCain and others have convinced some states, including New York, to ban the sport all together. This opposition and recent death of mixed martial artist Michael Kirkham on June 26 at a US-sanctioned MMA event, begs the question: Is MMA safe? What’s the Big Deal?…

The NFL season is peeking at us from around the corner, and there are some teams that should be great. The Titans, the Jets, and the Vikings should all have fantastic seasons. However, each of these teams houses a monumentally stupid player who is not cognizant of team chemistry. Given that Albert Haynesworth let down the Redskins you would think that these guys would be more sensitive to holdouts and selfish moves. This is usually when everyone starts screaming at their computer because NFL players have a “right” to hold out. They have a “right” to get all the money…

We are all familiar with the antics of Terrell Owens – Most notably the pomp-pomp’s, the Sharpie, sit-ups in the driveway, and the sideline tirade with Donovan McNabb. Owens’ career has been almost as flamboyant as Richard Simmons, the major reason he has yet to land with any teams. Last week Owens said that ESPN is responsible for painting an image of him which is undesirable for organizations in the NFL. Earlier during this week on a Boston radio interview Owens said he would like to play for Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. Owens even said he would…

George Steinbrenner, perhaps the most successful professional sports team owner of all time, died Tuesday at a hospital in Tampa, Florida. The official cause of death was a heart attack, but Steinbrenner’s health had been failing for the last few years. The outspoken owner of the New York Yankees had just celebrated his 80th birthday on July 4th. His career included 11 American league pennants and World Series titles in 1977-78, 1996, 1998-2000 and 2009. Steinbrenner rebuilt the Yankees from the ground up during his 37 year tenure as their owner. He purchased the lackluster team that hadn’t won a championship…

No more “moderation” in weight loss—aiming to lose one pound per week. No more giving yourself a long-term goal of 50 pounds in a year. A new study from Stockholm’s International Congress on Obesity says that those who lose three pounds per week are more apt to stick with weight loss and reach their goals. I love Sweden. They have great meatballs. They gave us Ikea, for heaven’s sake. My daughters look adorable in those Hanna Andersson dresses. Really, what’s not to love? Now, those same practical, forward-thinking Swedes are telling us to take the weight loss bull by the…

Football season is around the corner and it’s time to get “in the mood” for the pigskin.  Though most folks around here want to get big, we can’t ignore the fun alternatives to cardio. I know that getting into “football shape” is far different than bodybuilding, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t take our favorite sport and make it into a workout.  Some of these exercises may already be in your repertoire, but they’re worth a look. If you want to take some of these exercises and modify them to your tastes or needs–go ahead!  We want you to…

Last week we opened our series on the importance of seeds with chia. Today I wanted to introduce you to my runner-up in the favorites department, hemp seed! Hemp is an amazing plant, good for making rope, jewelry and even diapers. However, this wonder plant isn’t used only for its fibers and mind-altering effects. The seeds, or hearts, are fantastic! Let’s look at the benefits of adding hemp to your diet. The 411 on THC Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the compound responsible for the state of altered perception most people have when they ingest marijuana. You’ll be glad to know that…

George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees, died this morning of a heart attack at the age of 80. He was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Florida and passed away at 6:30 am. Whether you loved him or hated him (and there were plenty of people on both sides), everyone knew that Steinbrenner was in charge. He managed the team with an iron fist for nearly four decades. Spending lavish amounts on payroll and never being afraid to make a tough decision, the team flourished under his reign. “The Boss” brought seven Wold Series titles to the…
