Major League Baseball gave us some great action as we moved into the second month of the season. The most noteworthy moment of the week was Oakland Athletics‘ Dallas Braden throwing a perfect game against the best team in baseball, the Tampa Bay Rays. I’ll get into “My Mound” Braden in detail on the Wednesday pod-cast. Two of the games best hitters, Manny Ramirez and Joe Mauer, made their return to the diamond from injury this week. Baseball in California is still backwards and progressively getting worse for two of the supposed power houses. Which one of those Cali teams…
Flour is a villain to many. It’s got a reputation for making us fat and lazy, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Whole grains, especially those that you mill yourself, are packed with nutrition. Today we’ll focus on wheat and the nutritional aspects of grinding your own grain. In the future, I’ll talk about the nutrition gleaned from various grains and how to combine them effectively in a well-rounded diet, as well as review a few grain mills I’ve used. Why Mill Your Own Grain Wheat, for those that don’t have Celiac disease, is a nearly perfect food.…
Cincinnati Reds pitcher, Edinson Volquez, tested positive for a performance enhancing drug and has been suspended 50 games for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Volquez, recovering from Tommy John Surgery, will serve his entire suspension while on the disabled list. Volquez claims his positive test was the result of taking a fertility drug prescribed to him in his native Dominican Republic. According to New York Times reporter, Michael Schmidt, that drug was clomiphene. While fertility drugs such as clomiphene and Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) have legitimate uses, they are banned by MLB because they boost…
Sugar. It’s simultaneously everyone’s best friend and archenemy. Its sweetness is alluring, but its effects are alarming. One taste can literally be addictive. For those of us who are interested in being as healthy as possible, refined sugar just isn’t an option. However, there are many alternatives that masquerade as healthier versions of refined sugar, which they emphatically aren’t, and some alternatives work well only in specific applications. Today I’ve got the lowdown on sugar replacements that are easy to find and relatively inexpensive. Agave Nectar Agave nectar comes from the agave tequilana plant. Yep, it’s the same plant you…
Former New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor was arrested on Thursday, May 7, 2010, in a prostitution investigation in New York. It is alleged that Taylor was soliciting an underage prostitute–ouch! According to a report on ESPN, the 16-year-old girl had been beaten up and and forced into prostitution by a man who drove her to the hotel specifically to meet Taylor. He’s paid his bail and he’s awaiting the legal process, but he’s an NFL Hall of Famer. How does the NFL deal with such a “gash” on its integrity? Roger Goodell has choices, but he also has to look at…
When the Raiders are on the verge of releasing Jamarcus Russell, I have to ask myself, “When do you press the panic button?” There are 32 teams in the NFL and some need to make a change before it’s too late. There are three degrees of “needing a change.” There’s the, “we need to do something before we’re tarred and feathered.” Also, the, “we need one more impact player and we need to get him at all costs.” But the most dangerous is, “we think we might need to make a move, but we’ve already waited too long and we…
The biggest controversy in sports and athletic competition over the last 10 years has been the use of steroids. How much, if any, do they improve an athlete’s performance? The drug of choice, with the most question marks surrounding it, is HGH (Human Growth Hormone). HGH is a protein-based poly-peptide hormone which stimulates growth and cell reproduction and regeneration in humans and other animals. Of course steroids help athletes, otherwise why would they take them. If sex didn’t give gratification men wouldn’t want to hump everything that moves. Does HGH actually improve performance enough to be a concern-able difference? Seconds…
Corn evokes images of midwestern values, amber waves and hardworking farmers. It’s too bad that a grain so average in nutrition is the primary source of nutrition for most meat and eggs. There are some scary things going on in the food industry. They’re big, they’re powerful, and they’re controlling what most of America (and because of America’s influence, what a large part of the industrialized world) eats. They hybridize crops for the best yield, genetically modify our food and don’t have to tell us, and hide their product in almost everything on grocery store shelves. And you know what?…
The first month of the Major League Baseball season has given us excitement and some welcome surprises. If someone would have asked me to bet my life on a southern California team that would have the best record a month into the season, the San Diego Padres would have been my fourth choice. I would have said the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the N. Hollywood Boys & Girls Club 12 under team, and then the Padres. Some old names have left big impressions in the early going, and when I say “big” I’m not referring to…
I must admit to a bit of righteous indignation upon reading, “What To Eat NOW: The Eggless Diet.” I concur that eggs are cheap, easy and versatile. However, that’s about where I part ways with this blasphemy of the egg. Argument No.1: Are There Really THAT Many Allergies to Eggs? Nutritional Facts 1 Egg; Hard-boiled Calories 211 Total Fat 14g Saturated Fat 4g Cholesterol 577mg Sodium 169mg Total Carbs 2g Sugars 2g Protein 17g 1 Egg; Scrambled Calories 367 Total Fat 27g Saturated Fat 8g Trans Fat 1g Cholesterol 774mg Sodium 616mg Total Carbs 5g Sugars 4g Protein 24g “They”…
