Did you ever wonder why drugstore medicines tout their natural ingredients? It got me to thinking as to why I’d rather pay into big pharma’s pockets instead of just going the natural route from the beginning. A few years ago, I decided to ditch the Tylenol and start using more natural remedies for my family’s health. Over the years, I’ve found myself using lots of products regularly. In fact, the only “traditional” medicine I keep in the house is allergy relief, pain reliever for when I feel a migraine coming on, and of course an emergency prescription in case a…
We are all fully aware of what cold water immersion, or “ice baths”, are. They are incredibly uncomfortable and yet extraordinarily invigorating. Professional (and maybe some amateur) athletes use them during intensive training periods in order to facilitate a more rapid recovery between workouts. I’ve touched upon something very similar in the “Kick-start recovery by washing your face” article, which explained that cold water to the face activated the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) which then helped initiate recovery. But ice baths involve completely immersing the body in temperatures just above freezing (as in less than 60 degrees). This obviously has…
This week a collection of clueless wealthy men will get together and vote on some very important issues regarding the NFL. The league will also be looking into whether or not it would be a good idea to have the Super Bowl in a windy refrigerator. The people voting on this topic please put your pants on backwards and walk around all day. Let me know how that works out for you guys. Roger Goodell plans to meet with the NFL’s most hands on quarterback. Three major questions with three basic solutions. Yes, No, and some simple legal advice provided…
Brett Favre and Brad Childress aren’t talking—at least that’s what they say. I was thinking that if Childress and Favre’s marriage dissolved then the Vikings would open the floodgates at the Draft. Mayhem would ensue as they scrambled to fix their QB issues. Minnesota might even miss a pick while they were trying to make an “11th hour” deal. Every team in the NFL would be looking to take advantage of a desperate Minnesota team to get draft picks and playmakers. However, Brad Childress seems to be in control of the situation. He’s been very matter-of-fact about his dealings with…
The Washington Redskins and Arizona Cardinals are in a state of delusion. Each team thinks they are making the right moves without spending loads of cash. Each one is wrong. The situations in Washington and Arizona are far more complicated than the proclamation, “We aren’t spending a lot of money”. They have Quarterback issues—big ones. The Cardinals have Matt Leinart and they just signed Derek Anderson. The Redskins have Jason Campbell and the #4 overall pick in the draft. Oh, and they revamped their entire coaching staff/front office. I think these teams are forgetting some of the inherent problems that…
This is the time of year when fantasy baseball dorks search for the players they think are going to have a big year. These guys look into everything; batting order, OBS, OPS, SLG, ERA, WHIP, and do so by cross referencing these stats over several years. For those of you with girlfriends and a social life, don’t judge these guys. They are the group that keeps baseball going during the dog days of summer. Plus they have really strong forearms. The National League has the down side of letting a pitcher hit for himself. This creates for a lot of…
Every sports fan knows and has an opinion about Tiger Woods. After the recent sex scandal, everyone with a TV and TMZ has an opinion on Woods. You may not like Woods as a person, but you have to respect the fact that he is the greatest golfer since Jack Nicklaus. Woods will be making his highly anticipated return to the links for the Masters, held at Augusta National April 8th – 11th. In a statement Woods said, “The Masters is where I won my first major and I view this tournament with great respect. After a long and necessary…
It’s time, it’s time! We’re two days away from the official beginning of spring, and I’m ready to start harvesting that beautiful produce for my meals! Let’s check out some of the best ingredients and how to use them. Why Buy In Season? From your wallet to your waistline, buying in-season produce can benefit you. First, price. When you eat a great deal of produce, it can get costly. We spend fully 2/3 of our grocery budget on fruits and vegetables, and we buy almost exclusively in season. Although we enjoy bananas year-round, you won’t catch me spending $5 a…
Ah, it’s springtime and March Madness is here. I can already hear the buzzer, the shrieking crowd as a big-name goes down—and the sound of some 14 seed setting off an atom bomb on my bracket… I love to pick my bracket every year, don’t you? Every year I think I’ve totally got it locked down and then it dies a painful death. Well, I’m a glutton for punishment so here I am again making my bracket public. You can view by clicking right here. Feel free to follow along with me during the tournament. Also, feel free to bust…
If you’re like me, you want high quality protein but want to avoid soy if possible. I’ve come up with a mix of vegan proteins that works well together, tastes pretty darn good, and is great for both bulking and cutting. I choose to skip soy for many reasons. First, because soy is added to everything from baby formula to protein bars to facial creams. I try not to eat anything in excess, and this big soy push scares me. Second, soy isoflavones depress thyroid function, thereby decreasing metabolism and causing other thyroid diseases. The last thing I need when…
