Juan Salas Tests Positive for Performance-Enhancing Drug, Suspended 50 Games

Tampa Bay Devil Rays relief pitcher, Juan Salas became the first player suspended under Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Treatment and Prevention Program this year. Salas is the 16th player to be suspended overall, and the 15th positive test (Jason Grimsley was suspended for accepting a shipment of human growth hormone in 2006 but never tested positive after 2003’s anonymous testing).

Salas, 28, was having a pretty good season going 1-1 with a 3.95 ERA so far.

From the Devil Rays statement after Salas was suspended:

“The Tampa Bay Devil Rays fully support Major League Baseball’s drug testing policy. We will do all we can to help Juan get his career headed back on a positive course.”
