What is the one of the few foods on the planet that never spoils? Honey. The Egyptians used honey for embalming bodies and centuries later it was found in tombs unspoiled. Fresh from the beehive, raw honey is runny and sticky. As it ages pure honey will crystallize. Through time, sun, and heat exposure the consistency and color can change. But it will never spoil. While this fact is amazing, there are more benefits of honey to discover. In antiquity when armies were in their camps awaiting battle they would eat a handful to gain strength and clarity of mind.…

This week, Sluggers and Slugs will cover the past week’s highlights, preview some of this week’s match-ups, and predict the American and National League wild card races. Week 18 Highlights Do you know the saying, “Dropping like flies?” Well, not even that saying can do justice to the Boston Red Sox.  They have been falling like rain this season and continued to do so when Kevin Youkilis went on the DL with his season ending thumb injury. Another team bitten by the injury bug this season has been the Philadelphia Phillies.  The Phillies lost 1B Ryan Howard to the 15…

The face of evil. Photo from: Dave Krieg’s Strike Beard NFL referee Bill Leavy opened a “rule interpretation” meeting by apologizing for sucking at the 2006 Super Bowl. In case you don’t remember, the Steelers beat the Seahawks 21-10. Now Leavy says he’s “sorry” that he didn’t do better. He rolls his sob story like this: “It was a tough thing for me. I kicked two calls in the fourth quarter and I impacted the game, and as an official you never want to do that.” “It left me with a lot of sleepless nights, and I think about it…

People suffering from ailments, illnesses, and even cancer may be able to  receive medicinal help for their various conditions from medicinal marijuana use.  It is not approved for medical use in all states because the tests for its pain-relieving prospects are relatively new. The fact that chronic recreational users receive a great amount of negative attention does not bode well for the medical side of marijuana use. People are constantly being arrested for both growing and selling marijuana illegally. I will readily admit on this blog that back in the day I also used marijuana. However, I also used it…

On a trip to Russia last year, I tried a sweet dessert called halvah. Not sure why I’d never had it in the States, as it most certainly isn’t Russian, but rather is believed to be of Turkish origin. Anyhow, if I didn’t love sesame seeds before trying this little delight, I’d have fallen instantly head-over-heels. Halvah is a paste of sesame seeds and honey. The variety I indulged was also dipped in dark chocolate, making it akin to a Reese’s Cup, but less sweet and more grown up. It was flat out delicious. Besides halvah, I love tahini (an…

Darrelle Revis may be a whiny holdout, but he’s still the best cornerback in the NFL. Troy Polamalu is simply the scariest safety in the game today. What do these two guys have in common? Unique workout routines. Ever since Revis was a standout at Pitt pro day, he has been using unique methods to keep himself in shape. In fact, many people would credit his workout with the phenomenal season he had in 2009. Troy Polamalu isn’t just long hair and a tongue-twisting name. When he came out of USC everyone knew he was going to be a beast. …

For many people the gym is a place for routine. Mondays are shoulders and biceps; Tuesdays are back and quads, etc.  I think you get my drift.  I bet some of you are even nodding asking how I knew your workout routine. My question to you is, “are you seeing the results you want?”  Most often people answer, “no.” The reason is that your body is prepared before you even work out for what you are going to do.  That means your metabolism is not fired up and your body is very unenthusiastic. You need to shake things up and re-ignite that…

The running back spins to his left, jukes back to his right, and, just as he crosses the line of scrimmage, the foot of a lineman the size of a Smart Car lands on his ankle. The crack of bone is audible as the running back lies prone, writhing in pain. Trainers sprint out onto the field, teammates shake their heads or huddle around their fallen fellow, the coach starts sweating. Soon the athlete is carted away, lost to the team, his career interrupted. That scenario plays out in the minds (and nightmares) of NFL coaches, personnel men, and even…

Naturally fermented foods are some of the best nutrition on the planet. You don’t have to take my word for it though, since the Chinese have eaten these foods for around 6,000 years! Whether you prefer sauerkraut, kimchi, yogurt, or miso, fermented foods can give you a huge nutritional boost for very little cost and effort. Check out the process and why it’s so amazingly healthy and simple! What Is Lacto-Fermentation? Most simply, lacto-fermentation is the process of preserving food by exposing it to the bacteria lactobacillus. You’ve probably heard of it, since it’s the active culture in most kinds…

I wanted to call this column, “I want to freaking write about football,” but I decided against it when I realized I’ll be writing about football until February. Then, I thought I should call it, “Stupid NBA players” but realized that was too obvious. Besides the fact that LeBron stuck it to Cleveland again there were some odd “goings-on” in the NBA.  Certain people shouldn’t be playing in certain places for certain teams. There is just a natural order of things that is not being respected.  You know that movie “Failure to Launch” where Matthew McConaughey gets attacked by a…
