Soleus

soleus

The soleus is a long flat muscle which runs down the posterior of the lower leg, beneath the large gastrocnemius.

The muscle is recruited during the extension of the ankle joint, especially when there is a significant bend in the knee. The seated calf raise is therefore highly effective for targeting the soleus, with the stronger gastrocnemius left muted due to the knee bend.
